In Ruins
Four Seasons of Grey (Metalblade Records)

By: Jeb Branin

This is hard edged progressive metal with intense vocals that belie the melody of the music to a certain extent. This is both good and bad. Good in that it gives the music a raw punishing edge but bad in that there are many times the vocals completely overshadow the music robbing the melody of any texture and depth. Much of this is the fault of the mix which keeps the vocals way out front, as is the norm with progressive metal, but this progressive is anything but the norm and the production just doesn't work. In the end the music of IN RUINS comes across as some bastard blend of neo-black and QUEENSRYCHE and it is not a potent blend in this case.
