Soil
El Chupacabra! (MIA Records -- 315 Church St., 2nd Floor, NY, NY 10013)

By: Jeb Branin

SOIL is the definition of what heavy metal in the 1990s has become. Thick, groovin' and heavy as hell. Like it or not this is the sound pioneered by the likes of the 'new' METALLICA and WHITE ZOMBIE. If you like your metal to pulsate and throb this is for you. The classic influences of heavy guitar rock have been married to the lessons learned from the grunge and alternative movements to create this neo-metal firestorm. I, for one, am rather indifferent to the whole scene although I've enjoyed what I've heard and I daresay this is as good as anything the genre has to offer. One real selling point of this puppy is that it has a real smooth quality. Everything flows and gels into a real seamless presentation. The songs display some diversity while not straying too far from the primary foundation of chunky rhythms and Hetfield- esque vocals.
