Tiny Tim with Brave Combo
Girl (Rounder Records)

By: Gary Pig Gold

Anyone not already familiar with the trials and tribulations, musical and otherwise, that was Mr.Tim should read no further. The rest of you I consider are already happily amongst the converted, and may even be willing to now admit that wading into an entire album of Tiny's has often in the past presented a challenge not unlike that posed by, oh, say "Trout Mask Replica" or those German box sets of Doris Day's. But listen: that was before our hero had the good fortune to make and record music with Texas' legendary (and so-aptly named for this project!) Brave Combo. For by supplying Tiny with his first legitimate accompanists, said band's finally helped elevate Tiny high above the level of novelty act, the cover of "Stairway To Heaven" included notwithstanding, and as a result, even the most casual and skeptical listener out there will find it hard to deny that Tiny really can sing and interpret 'em with the BEST. (ie: the title song is performed now with the world-weary bittersweetness a 24-year-old Beatle could only hint at). If you still equate Tiny Tim with tulips and the Tonight Show, I suggest you return to the amusement park of your memories: this album is NOT for you. Everyone else? Get ready to re-meet a dear old friend.
