Tindersticks
Waiting For The Moon (Beggars Banquet)

By: Cam Lindsay

They took a stab at proper songs, and dare I say even pop, in 1999 with Simple Pleasure, and still sounded miserable (what do you expect). Then in 2001, they switched to soul with a healthy dose of Al Green in tow on Can Our Love..., which worked, but obviously not enough to stick with it. Instead of attempting another new direction on their sixth album, Tindersticks have stuck with their winning formula of stirring drama and passionate orchestration. Waiting For The Moon harks back to the Curtains-era and before, where the songs were less dictated, and flowed more naturally, as if they'd been performing them for years. Another collaboration with a chanteuse is included as well, with Canadian singer Lhasa De Sala contributing to "Sometimes It Hurts" in a duet with singer Stuart Staples. Not surprisingly, it's marvelous, as De Sala's low, sexy voice can match Staples's word for word. Possibly the best of their many duets. Also included is an adaptation of Sarah Kane's play in the self-titled "4:48 Psychosis", in which Staples reads aloud lines to an appropriately choreographed soundtrack not unlike The Velvet Underground's "Heroin". As radical as it may sound, the track is well suited to the album and stands out for its worth. Waiting For The Moon is a welcome return to form by a band who are still a rare treasure to hear.
