Fishsticks/Hostile Takeover
Split 7" (Aloha Records)

By: Jeb Branin

FISHSTICKS are a somewhat mysterious and enigmatic band. Their records usually contain somewhere between very little and no information about the band so in spite of the fact I have a small handful of their records I can't tell you anything about them other than the fact they totally kick it out and hail from California and have a connection to Theologian Records. Their sound falls somewhere between oldschool OFFENDERS flavored thrash and early BLACK FLAG. That isn't to say they sound dated more along the lines of classic. The raw production value of this record really adds to the overall impact of their sound. HOSTILE TAKEOVER on the flip of this disc only have one tune. A whimsical electronica (as in KRAFTWERK) interpretation of BLACK FLAG's "Nervous Breakdown" the title track from their first 7". Oh brother is it terrible. Listen able for the novelty but certainly not something that you would want to have to tolerate more than a couple of times. I'm assuming that it is supposed to be some sort of a joke but who knows? At any rate the two sides of this record definitely provide some contract and counterpoise but you'll want to snag it for the FISHSTICKS. Drawing an assumption from the stamped numbers on this record there were only 300 of these pressed so if you want one you better start looking now.
