Pedro The Lion
Control (Jade Tree)

By: Alex Steininger

When Pedro the Lion does songs like "Options", they sound like another indie rock band to throw on to the already massive pile, doing nothing to separate themselves from the masses. But when a song like "Rapture" comes along, its buzzing guitars and melodic senses in full force, you can't help but turn your head and take notice. "Penetration" is another high point for the album, a fuzzy, distorted guitar led rock song that has the pop smarts to make a noisy rock song hook-laden and quite infectious.

The majority of the album lives up to the melodic, rocking guitars and meaty rhythm section of the latter mentioned songs, which is where the band excels. Their softer songs just don't possess the energy that their rock songs do, and so when they're giving it their all, Pedro the Lion climbs near the top of the indie rock world. But when they stray, they sound generic and weak. I'll give this a B.
