Graig Markel
The Gospel Project (Pattern 25)

By: Alex Steininger

Seattle's Graig Markel follows up his previous solo record, Hard Grammar, with another mixture of late night conversationals, R&B grooves, Motown soul, and indie rock shoegazing. The Gospel Project is a deeply hypnotic record, the rich soul absorbing you at every turn, while the indie rock edge keeps things interesting as the subtle, but well placed grooves make you feel the power that music can bring to one's soul.

Markel is no run-of-the-mill genre-hopper. The ease and poise at which he melds the variety of sounds and styles together is somewhat of a marvel. Markel's voice brings it all together with a drippy, dark, smoky voice, the comforting sound you long to hear for on a lonely, rainy night.

The Gospel Project is a smart, sharp dressed record, one that would certainly be up for GQ' 'Best Dressed' list if such a list applied to music. I'll give it an A.
