The Pearlfishers
Across The Milky Way (Marina Recordings)

By: Gary "Pig" Gold

"Across The Milky Way" just could not have been a more entirely apt title for this little treasure. Those four words depict perfectly the vocal-heavy sounds herein, in all of their lazy, hazy, lush and windswept glory.

Now, this may not exactly be what one could call the Party disc of the season -- I mean, the snares don't really kick in til Track 4 ! -- but if one wishes to magnificently wallow within a mellow, David-Gates-produces-"Sunflower" kinda vibe, listen no further. For example: "Sweet William" drifts atop a lush bed of "va-va-va"s, "We'll Be The Summer" could single-handedly resurrect The Association, and the instrumental "Vampires Of Camelon" sounds as if no less than B. Bacharach had joined B. Wilson to score "Love, American Style"!

Not forgetting "Shine It Out," which is as near a perfect slice of the pop pie as I've devoured in a long long time, this is a disc that bunts instead of grand-slams, to coin someone else's phrase, but its gentle, spot-on bop provides a welcome relief to the usual in-your-face (as opposed to towards-the-heart) m.o. currently prowling the globe.
