Clutch
Blast Tyrant (DRT)

By: Mike SOS

Clutch is one of those bands, like Primus, whose rabid fan base and quirky, left of center delivery has helped pave a unique yet comfortable path for the Maryland-based rock troupe. Seemingly peaking its head out from the underground in extremely sporadic spurts, Neil Fallon and company have done so once again with its latest offering, the 15-track Blast Tyrant, showcasing a funkier, more free-flowing version of the veteran quartet. While much of the band's early aggression has morphed into stoner rock solidarity and jam band revelry, there's still a slew of clever lyrics and enthralling interludes to make the most ardent Clutch fan happy, such as the driving political satire of "The Mob Goes Wild" or the fun-loving groove of "Subtle Hustle". Also included in this collection, besides the usual hard rock swagger we've grown to love from the band, is a slew of experimental material keeping the listener captivated, like the swampy stomp of "The Regulator" and the atmospheric instrumental closer "WYSIWYG". While other bands struggle to maintain cohesion and identity, Clutch seems confident enough to explore and test the musical waters while retaining the same unbridled spirit which propelled its early works, a feat rarely seen in today's taciturn music industry climate. For a solid shot of hard rock full of twists and turns, no one does it better than Clutch, and Blast Tyrant furthers their consistency.
