Soulmotor
Soulmotor (CMC International)

By: Chris Paules

I had no idea what to expect from this album. A simple purple CD inside a simple white envelope. With only the credits and song titles written on the CD, I was not quite sure what I was gonna get. What I did get was an album of finely produced songs and great songwriting. This band brings to mind modern bands like Sevendust and Creed, while bringing back recollections from bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. The songs have a bluesy flair to them like the track "Technicolor Dream". Though not a band to stay laid back forever, Soulmotor let's it all out during "Omega Son" and the album's second track, "Lizard Boots". Not only is the production great, but the album is arranged to take you on somewhat of a ride. Starting off with the rocker "Guardian Angel," it keeps you on your toes through the second and third songs, with the band really charging up on "Omega Son"...flairs of guitars, pick scrapes, random noises, tribal drums, this track definitely gets my vote for the best on the album. The one thing that really bothered me about this album is the way the last half of the album seemed to drag on, while the first half of the album kept you on your toes, the second half of the album grew more and more monotenous. A standout on the last half of the album was the blues infected number "Super Model", it gave the album yet another kick of energy...with it's catchy bass line and the optomistic lyrics, this track keeps the album moving just as it ends. I'll give this album an A-.
