JOHNNY DOWD Wrong Side Of Memphis (Johnny Dowd, 111 Coy Glen Road, Ithaca, NY 14850) By: GARY PIG GOLD
I have absolutely no idea who Johnny Dowd is, where he's (coming) from, or what, in general, the deal is. All I DO know is that this deliciously semi-fi, spookily-sung, starkly-accompanied disc is a true, wondrous, top-to-bottom gem: equal parts Captain Beefheart, Frankie Teardrop, Muddy Waters and Luke the Drifter, listening is an exciting if dangerous midnight crawl across the underbelly of the American Dream, with all that entails - and promises. Populated by a cast of seedy characters full of little but ill intent, these fifteen songs will, like all the best "art" around, stick with you long after the CD's shut off, and'll no doubt pop up to haunt you for months and years to come most likely at around 3:30 some morning, I should imagine. Excuse me now while I try to track more about this guy down; in the meantime, each of you should get your own copy of this understated little masterpiece immediately. Promise?
