Naglfar Diabolical (Relapse Records) By: Jeb Branin
Although marketed as a death metal band NAGLFAR seem like a fairly mundane black metal outfit to these tired ears. Yes they have many of the song structures that make death metal such a powerful musical entity but their bread and butter is the tinny riffs and one screechy vocals epitomized by the neo-black artists. Metal staples like heaviness and aggression are sacrificed in an attempt to cling to the 'blackness' of late 90's trends. Many bands manage to succeed in this approach but most of them sound like prepubescent versions of the scene godfathers. NAGLFAR don't do anything wrong per se they just travel such a well worn path that they are boring.
