Diabolical (Regain Records)

 It has been over five years since NAGLFAR's "Diabolical" album was first released in the U.S. so it seems none too surprising that it would get a re-release now. None too surprising except for the fact this album is mediocre at best. Although often described as a death metal band, NAGLFAR seem like a fairly mundane black metal outfit to these tired ears. Yes, they have many of the song structures that make death metal such a powerful musical entity but their bread and butter is the tinny riffs and screechy vocals epitomized by the neo-black artists. Metal staples like heaviness and aggression are sacrificed in an attempt to cling to the 'blackness' of late 90's trends. Many bands manage to succeed in this approach but most of them sound like prepubescent versions of the scene godfathers. NAGLFAR don't do anything wrong per se, they just travel such a well worn path that it is boring.
