Enuff Z-Nuff
Paraphernalia (Stoney/Spitfire Records)

By: Jeb Branin

This band certainly has an appropriate name because after repeated attempts to make it all the way through this collection of crap I finally said "Enough is enough." In spite of contributions from such noteworthy artists as James Young of STYX and Rick Nielsen of CHEAP TRICK "Paraphernalia" isn't worth the plastic it is pressed on. Off kilter rock -n roll tunes that try too hard to be quirky and distinctive and manage merely to be forgettable. ENUFF Z-NUFF have an annoying tendency to let their get sound mired in eighties style hard rock, which is in no way a bad thing, but it brutally highlights their complete ineptness at writing a memorable tune. If 80's style hard rock was anything it was pop, which means it lived and died by its hooks. There are no hooks on this album anywhere. Whereas CHEAP TRICK could take an oddball riff and work magic with it, EZN merely manage to get lost. Whereas James Young penned STYX tunes managed to construct huge yet melodic and infectious guitar riffs EZN only manage to make a huge mess. The final nail in the coffin of this album is its psychedelic undercurrents which instead of giving the tunes personality further muddy the water. This is horrendous.
