Sit 'N' Spin
"Dance With My Baby" and "Be Your Girl" b/w "El Guapo!" [7" EP] (Pure Vinyl)

By: Gary "Pig" Gold

With each consecutive release, Heidi, Monica, other Monica and Maria grow more assured, more musically head-strong, and as a result tackle a more depthly range of sounds and styles. This broadening of sights is no more in evidence than on the downright catchy "Dance With My Baby", which forsakes the band's usual garage settings for the more wide-open spaces of a Malibu frug-fest circa '64. Its already infectious melody is made even moreso once the Beach Girls harmonies are sprinkled on top. Yes, in a perfect world, this song would spend seven to twelve weeks high atop Britney and even Celine on Top Forty's the world over.

"Be Your Girl" is more typically S & S (meaning the Worm or even Dirty Dawg would be the more appropriate dance-step here), but it's on the lowly flipside, "El Guapo", that the band really let more than their hair down: Seldom have these guys ever sounded so fluidly footloose, with some totally unexpected - and delightful - bass and guitar interplay helping close this li'l record off with an honest-to-Montezuma bang.

Guided as always by able ears of them grip-weeding Bicker Brothers in the producer's chair, this is by far Sit'n'Spin's best, most varied release to date. And the good news is? There's an entire new ALBUM out now too!
