Beachwood Sparks Once We Were Trees (Sub Pop) By: Alex Steininger
A retro-pop gem, Once We Were Trees, the sophomore release from Beachwood Sparks, blends the rootsy gust of alt-country with shining melodies. Subtle and slow moving, the songs are a throwback to 70's AM radio, where the songs were lush and hook-laden, but not obnoxiously so. Ever so softly, they float in the air, waiting for you to pick up on them. And when you do they dance around your head with precision and joy, letting their hair down enough to have fun, controlling the situation as to offer up tight performances with just the right zest. I'll give this an A-.
