The Used The Used (Reprise Records) By: Alex Steininger
More major label, run-of-the-mill hard rock with manufactured angst, The Used's self-titled full-length is as made for radio as they come. Produced by Goldfinger's John Feldmann, a man with a good ear and great taste in music, you can't help but wonder what the band sounded like before they entered the studio with Feldmann. At any rate, this record, though it does have its moments, like the melodic "Poetic Tragedy", is mostly comprised of songs that grate on your nerves until you can't take it anymore, that all-too-familiar radio approach that bets it will wear you down and then convert you to a fan. It doesn't work though, it's already been done too much, too often. I'll give this a D.
