No Vacation From The World (Kung Fu Records)

 It's an album of conscientious afterthoughts stemming from an adolescent knife twist and seventeen year old social decay. Anyone who'd thought that fame and fortune meant serious lyricism vanishes without a trace hadn't heard of these guys. Yes, in fact, where they say "Take me to a place where only happiness is all around, 1986 is where we'd go--" is something I would wholly identify with but after going word for word from here through another ten or twelve others, I'm about ready to completely close the door on my past and welcome middle age! I don't think there's a single song on the road ahead that doesn't reflect in some way with an impressionable youth's bout with break ups and broken hearts. Okay so it's a soapy, surprisingly serious jaunt through the a late teen head space where not everyone's strung out on drugs and pissed on politics yet demoralization develops in any and all forms -- and this is an up tempo and relatively bright style of Pop glee with Punk undertones that's not a far stretch from Weezer or Ween! The Israeli-- and I think somehow they force in a Moog during song six, "Too Late To Start Over," and suddenly I perk up and whoa, there's an idea! I began saying their Israeli background, firstly, contrasts with the idea of Punk music on Western shores, but more significantly, these guys come away more like Malibu Beach than the mean streets of Haifa! The music's-- you know, I'm not going on a limb saying it's been done to death by hundreds of So. Cal Punk wannabes who've earned an endorsement or two for the annual Van's Warped or some line of skater and surf gear, and so for the Israelite-soundalikes -- why not!? The tunes are giddy, catchy, generally error free and in perfect tune with the oh-so-important background harmonizing that settle any and all differences with the ol' schooler scowls. "No Vacation From The World" seeks refuge from the life of doubt, despair and the down turned brow that demeans the urgent inquiry of a hopeful youth; So if you like bands like the New Found Glory and Nerf Herder types, or those that sways to the side of sincerity over silly, you're getting a full weeks worth of daytime drama right here!
