Neil Perry / A Days Refrain Split 3" CD (Robotic Empire) By: Jeb Branin
One definite problem with the new breed screamo-meets-grind-meets-metal bands is that they have a hard time finding a balance between those influences that works. Additionally they have trouble doing something distinct and original. Fortunately, neither one of these bands has either one of those problems. So there is no need to approach this CD with pre-conceived notions or biases, now is there? NEIL PERRY spits out the DEP inspired blast with the best of them but counterpoises it with a healthy dose of melodic underpinnings that rely heavily on the more classic emo sound (y'know, actual singing and other silliness like that). A DAYS REFRAIN does the same thing. They take the entire emo spectrum from RITES OF SPRING to Y2K2 and blend it. Besides, you can't beat these dinky discs for collector nerd value, now can you?
