Low Flying Owls - Elixir Vita (Stinky Records)
Singapore Sling - The Curse Of... (Stinky Records)

By: Cam Lindsay

Stinky Records has done their homework well, releasing albums simultaneously by two bands who couldn't complement each other better if they tried. Low Flying Owls and Singapore Sling exude enough psychedelic noise between them to create a new fuel source. Sacramento's Low Flying Owls embrace trippy atmospherics with swirling, feedback-driven guitars on their second full-length album. Elixir Vita_ travels back and forth between menacing fuzz-driven freakouts and gently strummed comedown ballads. Maintaining a musical style recently popularized by the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Warlocks, Low Flying Owls fit in well as compatriots with the thrillseeking "What My Friends Say" and the euphoric "Georgie Shot Johnnie". From Rejkyavik, Iceland, Singapore Sling tap into a wall of sound that rings with tuneful white noise and snarling attitude. Like The Raveonettes, they're suckers for the 50s Beat sound and road culture, radiating an aura that screams Marlon Brando in The Wild Ones. The ?ber-cool chic of the band is sifted with the heavy presence of The Velvet Underground ("Summer Garden") and The Jesus & Mary Chain ("Midnight"). Their originality may be nonexistent, but the rush is too good to make you care.
