IV-Self Portrait (Life Is Abuse)

By: Jeb Branin

The latest offering by UNPERSONS takes their dark, seedy, and twisted sound to new extremes. IV-Self Portrait is by far the most over-the-top offering I've heard from UNPERSONS.

The CD is a single quarter-hour track that convulses and undulates all over the place, like a slug crawling over a salt lick. The press material compares it to UNITED MUTATIONS, and as a huge U.M. fan my initial reaction was "no way." But as I listened, the comparison not only made sense, it became obvious. Whatever musical muse was behind the bizarre constructs of U.M. must have gotten drunk, become suicidal, and then haunted UNPERSONS mercilessly until they churned this out. The idea that this might truly be considered a "self portrait" by the band gives me pause; or at least creeps me out.

They say true brilliance is often disturbed - in this case that is certainly true.
