Live - The Music of Vivian Quinn Sayles Performed by the Michael Smolens Sextet +4 (Delish Records 510-222-6209 in El Sabrante, CA)

By: Jeb Branin

I have a weak spot for jazz and after hearing this tape I must say that my weak spot has gotten downright mushy. Vivian Quinn Sayles was a part of the original collective who helped found the 924 Gilman St. Project,Northern California's premiere punk rock club. And that is as close to anything punk you'll find on this tape. Instead you'll be treated to 11tunes of pure, classic, improv jazz. Recorded half a decade ago, this live performance highlights Vivian on piano with a rather large combo pouring it all out. The songs vary as to the degree of structure they possess from fairly rigid numbers to pure improv as almost everybody on stage gets in on the act for a solo or three. The music is sometimes subdued and other times bounces between musicians with the hustle and bustle reflective of the american society that gave birth to jazz music in the first place.
