Cuspidor
Keys To Quezaltenango (Lelp Recordings)

By: Alex Steininger

On their second release, Portland-based indie Lelp Recordings discover a blossoming lo-fi treat in Cuspidor. Their latest, Keys To Quezaltenango is a bare bones, minimalist approach to folk-pop. The quartet, working through the limitations of writing all the songs around a guy and an acoustic guitar, adding little accompaniment the majority of time, the songs come to life on tape and, surprisingly, sound beautifully flawed, the passion and love for the craft its saving grace. Keys To Quezaltenango is still a work in progress, a record from a band that has some hurdles to overcome and a few more records to develop over. But, when all is said and done, people will look back on this record and recognize the roots of all future work, and love it for that. And, for now, it's still a solid listen. I'll give it a B+.
