Patrick O'Donnell Then I Woke Up (Skoda Records) By: Alex Steininger

Patrick O'Donnell's Then I Woke Up is an exercise in confusion between a singer-songwriter who wants to just rock out and have fun, without the presence of a band, and someone who wants to write more plaintive, melody-centric numbers. It is in this tug-of-war that the album suffers. It's got some beautiful melodies and some solid, straight-ahead guitar rock, but when the two come together, the result isn't always spectacular. The rock suffers sounding loose and unprepared. Which isn't always a bad thing, and could work, had O'Donnell not of propped it up with semi-delicate pop melodies and a sense of warm that leans more towards well produced, together songs than your fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants rock 'n' roll. Still, there are some gems buried on this album. I'll give it a C.
