Hoods / Freya
Split CD (Victory Records)

By: Jeb Branin

Two of the heaviest and burliest hardcore bands square off on this split (lip) CD. HOODS are a band whose mystic and unapologetic lack of restraint has assured them a diehard legion of fans. As they so aptly declare in "West Coast Worldwide" they are a movement as much as a band. Their six tracks on offer here are some of their most bitter and angry to date. HOODS have always been a step removed from the "insert testosterone, remove brain" ultra-macho hate-edge bands but the lyrics on here aren't good evidence of that. FREYA are a band that I admit to not being familiar with before hearing them here. My loss. Their sound is an Earth-churning concoction that is heavy on metallic crunch (all puns intended) and festooned with a hardcore rage that won't take a back seat to anyone. When you hear them described as "metalcore" you better believe it, no band is moreso, that's for sure. I am a without question a HOODS fan but much to my surprise the FREYA tracks are my favorites here. I just can't get enough of this cranium cracking aural devastation!
