Josh Hodges (now known as Sexton Blake)
Explosive Motion Picture Score Sexton Blake (Expunged Records)

By: Bryan Bingold

"I want to see the movies of my dreams". Built To Spill's Doug Martsch sang that once, and as much as I think that lyric rings true, I also want to hear the soundtrack to said movies. Little did I know that Josh Hodges would come out with a soundtrack to a fictitious film that would accomplish this for me. Released as a solo album that has become a full-fledged band, Sexton Blake, who has recently saturated my town with a string of shows that boggle and amaze me every time I see them. The (now) self-titled album, has never left my CD player for long. Hodges' uncannily mellow vocals and simplistically intricate arrangements with guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and the occasional cello make this album something you could listen to as slowly following asleep. "Want to Die" showcases the songwriting and arranging that Hodges could easily become famous from. Lyrically, Hodges' leans more to the depressive confessions of heart ache and loss, but musically and vocally he provides such a quirkiness that the lyrics seem almost light and inconsequential. The only question remains if the magic that Hodges brought to his music will change now that it's a full band? Only time will tell, lucky for us Hodges released a timeless album for us to have and hold throughout the feature presentation of the movies of our dreams.
